Best Places to Stay in Edinburgh

When you think of Edinburgh, you visualise Scottish architecture , a man with a bagpipe playing “Scotland the Brave” and of course Harry Potter. Edinburgh is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the UK but it is equally expensive. One who is planning a visit has to make sure they are staying comfortably in this city without breaking the bank. In this blog, I will cover various stay options like Hostels and Hotels ranging from low to high end budget options. As the prices vary season to season as mentioned in my previous blog (HYPERLINK), one will have to book their stay well in advance especially if they want to go during the Fringe or Christmas!

Hostels

1. Castle Rock Hostel

One of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. Located below Edinburgh Castle in the heart of the old town, Castle Rock Hostel has over 200 beds with multiple common rooms such as the posh lounge if you want to read a book for work, the groove lounge which has an artsy studio vibe with guitars and records being a good place to have a jamming session with fellow travellers and the cinema room if you want to watch a movie. The hostel has something for everyone!

The staff is also warm and helpful. They organise daily social events like karaoke nights, pub crawls, whiskey tasting to keep the hostel lively and mixed up. It is a really good budget option as the prices are very low starting from just £20. If you are a solo traveller or a bunch of friends, this could be a great option for you.

2. Kickass Hostel Grassmarket

The hostel lives up to its name, it surely is ‘Kickass’. A very social hostel with its own bar and beer garden in the old town. Being a social hostel, they have tons of activities like whiskey tasting, live music events, board games, pub crawls and quizzes. A big kitchen as well if you want to cook your own meals and save that extra penny. The chillout room has great views of the castle if on a cold evening you just want to read a book and admire its beauty. It is not only a budget friendly option but also a good place for a solo traveller.

3. St. Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh Old Town

If you have backpacked around Europe then this name will definitely ring a bell in your ears. St Christopher’s is a well known hostel chain across Europe. They are known for their cheap drinks (during Happy hours) at their bar which is an advantage in “Expensive Edinburgh”. They offer a 25% discount on food and drinks in the hostel. All the main tourist attractions are right at its doorsteps including bars and pubs as well if you are big on the nightlife. The hostel has their free walking tour which is worth going if you want to explore the city with people, the pub crawl and games night in the hostel.

These were my top 3 hostel recommendations in Edinburgh which are social and budget friendly – perfect for solo and broke backpackers – who want to explore this magical town.
