Thol Bird Sanctuary & Kanjari Deer Park

Thol Bird Sanctuary & Kanjari Deer Park

When we were planning the Gujrat trip, I wanted to go to a bird sanctuary. So we checked the Net and we found this unexplored bird sanctuary – Thol – 20kms away from Ahmedabad. We decided to go there.

It was the 2nd of January 2016.  I and my dad woke up by 5am and left our hotel by 6am. We reached the bird watching spot by 7am. We met some people who said that you need to buy a ticket; and that the ticket counter was 10kms away. The ticket counter was at the picnic spot. We drove there and purchased 2 tickets.  There was a parking lot so we parked our car and began our trail.

I was excited because I had read that this sanctuary has a good variety of birds. It was 7:30 am, but it was still a little dark.

We saw a pair of Southern Coucal. The sunrise at Thol was marvellous. When I saw the lake, I was surprised because the lake was so big. I saw a Darter for the camera. We started clicking snaps because it is rarely seen in Thane. At the other end I spotted a Pied kingfisher catching fishes.

There were Ducks, Shovelers, Wigeon, Teal, Garganey, Pintail, Grebes and many more. I saw three varieties of kingfishers- White breasted Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher and the Common Kingfisher.

I saw a bird catching fishes. It was a Oriental Honey Buzzard. Then I saw a Black winged stilt. It was very close to me. I saw a yellow wagtail finding its breakfast. At one point we saw a darter and a cormorant resting together.

We moved away from the lake and went near the watch tower. From the watch tower we could see small ponds. I was searching for something unique. I spotted a pair of Purple Swamphen. Swamphens are very shy by nature.  I saw a Red napped Ibis too. I saw another small unknown bird. From the watcher I saw a purple Heron sitting on a treetop and three Green Bee eaters with a laughing Dove. When we were coming back to the gate, we thought of seeing the lake again. We spotted around 3-5 Eurasian Wigeons.

Thol is very good for birding but it is quite crowded with people who come for jogging and morning walks.

Kanjari deer park

From the locals we heard that there was a deer park nearby named Kanjari deer park. As it was 10-15kms away, we decided to go there too. We asked the locals for directions and reached the place.

It is a grassland by the side of the road on the way to Kanjari. One can see Blackbucks in action here. We parked our car and moved into the grassland. There are villages around. One can find Blackbucks grazing around.

I also saw a pair of Wire tailed swallow. We spotted around 50 – 70 blackbucks. We were happy on seeing so many blackbucks after a long interval. The last time I had seen a large number of blackbucks was at the Blackbuck National Park, Velavader. It was a great experience in Gujrat. First, going to the Wild Ass sanctuary and then Thol bird sanctuary with Kanjari deer park. I had a great time in Gujrat.
