How to spend 24 Hours in Pisa
Famous for having one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Leaning Tower , Pisa is a little city situated in central Italy in the Tuscany region. The presence of early gothic elements in the Pisan Romanesque style of architecture differentiates it with the rest of Italy. Although a small city, it is a gala for medieval art lovers and here is how you can spend a day here exploring its uniqueness.
Morning
1. Admire the Tower of Pisa

You can start your day by the obvious -going to the famous Tower of Pisa. This freestanding bell tower of Pisa Cathedral known for its four degree lean is what attracts people from all over the world to visit this place. You can also go to the top of the tower which will cost you €20. My advice would be to start your day early in the morning when the golden light hits the white marble as later on during the day, it gets filled with people.
2. Visit the Pisa Cathedral

Next to the Tower of Pisa is the Pisa Cathedral which is a medieval Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The structure is influenced by various styles of architecture from Byzantine-style mosaics, Islamic-style rounded arches, to Lombardi-Emilian details. If you want to visit the cathedral for free, then get the free tickets prior to your visit as they have slots and timings, otherwise it will cost you €8.
3. Learn about the Camposanto

The Camposanto is the last monument on the northern edge of the cathedral square. It is said to be built around sacred soil which was used to accommodate graves. A legend claims that bodies buried in that ground will rot in just 24 hours. Again to visit the Camposanto, you need to book in advance for a free admission ticket.
4. Climb the City Walls
For a different perspective of Pisa, you can walk along the city walls walkway. This elevated path runs along the medieval walls surrounding the Piazza dei Miracoli and offers fantastic views of the Leaning Tower of Pisa from angles most visitors never see.
5. Explore Piazza dei Cavalieri

After visiting the cathedral complex, walk about 10 minutes to Piazza dei Cavalieri, one of the most beautiful squares in the city. It was once the political centre of medieval Pisa and later redesigned during the Renaissance by Giorgio Vasari. The square is dominated by the Palazzo della Carovana, now home to the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore, founded by Napoleon Bonaparte. The intricate façade decorated with graffiti patterns makes it one of the most photogenic spots in Pisa.
Afternoon – Lunch and relax
6. Walk along river Arno

Pisa is a wonderfully walkable city, and one of the best ways to soak in its atmosphere is by strolling along the banks of the Arno River. Colourful historic buildings line both sides of the river, reflecting beautifully in the water and giving the city its timeless charm. As you wander through the narrow alleys and small streets, you’ll pass local shops, cafés and elegant Pisan houses that showcase the understated beauty of Tuscan architecture. Take a moment to grab a scoop of gelato and sit by the river to enjoy the view.
7. Visit Santa Maria della Spina

Another beautiful stop along the river is Santa Maria della Spina. This tiny Gothic church sits right on the banks of the Arno River and is one of the most detailed pieces of Gothic architecture in the city. Despite its small size, the elaborate carvings and spires make it look almost like a miniature cathedral.
8. Look at the Tuttomondo Mural
The Tuttomondo mural was created by American artist Keith Haring in 1989. It is translated to ‘All the World” and is an explosion of colours on the wall expressing joy, peace, brotherhood. It is one of the last public murals created by him before his death. It is a unique art piece which one can relate to in today’s time.
Evening
9. End the Day with Aperitivo

As evening approaches, head to the lively student area near Borgo Stretto. Pisa is a university town thanks to the University of Pisa, so the atmosphere here becomes very vibrant in the evening. This is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo, a pre-dinner drink with small snacks while watching the city wind down.
Pisa may be famous for its leaning tower, but if you slow down and wander beyond the crowds, the city reveals medieval squares, riverside charm, and pockets of art that make it far more than just a quick photo stop. You can take a day trip from Florence and Cinque Terre to this place.
